Filling the Gap

Bridges

If you are missing one or more teeth, we recommend getting a bridge. When there is a gap in your teeth, the remaining teeth tend to shift and rotate into the empty space, resulting in a bad bite. The gap in the teeth can also lead to gum disease and temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorders.

Bridges are commonly used to replace one or more teeth. They literally forma bridge between two teeth, creating a prosthetic tooth in the middle. The two teeth holding the bridge are called abutments. The bridge is cemented to these teeth which serve to anchor the bridge. A new crown is created for the abutments – called a pontic. As with crowns, you have a choice of materials for bridges. At Glen Innes Dentist, we will help you decide which one is right for you, based on the location of the missing tooth (or teeth), its function, aesthetic considerations and cost. We can match ceramic and porcelain bridges to the colour of your natural teeth.

Implants

A new artificial tooth can be attached to an implant. This can be an excellent way of replacing a missing tooth or teeth, because other teeth are not involved. An implant is like an artificial tooth root, and is placed into the jaw bone where a tooth has been lost. One or more implants can be used, depending on the size of the space. After a time of healing (usually a few months) an artificial tooth is attached to the implant.

Treatment takes between six to twelve months to complete.

Not everyone has the right jaw structure for this treatment, we will need to check to see if an implant is the right option for you.

The Denture

There are several types of dentures suitable as a short or medium term tooth replacement.

The plastic partial denture fits on the gum and sometimes has wire clasps to hold it in place. the metal precision partial denture fits exactly with clasps and rests on existing teeth. Both are removable, and take them out to clean.
